Almost a year after the eruption of Calbuco Volcano, Mutare is still experiencing occasional volcanic sunset twilight arches. This evening (05 April) after two days of heavy rain the sky cleared to reveal beautiful colored crepuscular rays radiating from one of these. The display lasted for just a few minutes and was enhanced by beams of light from the setting sun being projected through gaps between some distant clouds still present over Zimbabwe to the west of Mutare . The accompanying screen capture of a portion of the Eumetsat high resolution visual satellite photograph of Southern Africa for 17.00 hrs on 05 April, from www.weatherphotos.co.za, shows bands of high cloud in Western Zimbabwe which were likely responsible for producing the rays. The photographs were taken using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 compact camera in sunset-auto mode.
